This herb has been used as folk medicine in Russia, Scandinavia, and in many other countries. Rhodiola was employed in Russia to boost the stamina of Olympic athletes and was even taken by cosmonauts to support physical and mental performance. Scientific literature from Sweden, Norway, France, Germany, the Soviet Union, and Iceland has supported the efficacy of Rhodiola as far back as 1725 and continues to do so. Uses date to the time of the Greek physician, Discorides, who documented its benefits in 77 CE in his medical text De Materia Medica.

Rhodiola has traditionally been used for many purposes including in the Himalayas for occasional altitude related discomforts. It is commonly appreciated for its apoptogenic abilities. Rhodiola root promotes a healthy response to stress and supports adrenal functioning.*

Rhodiola tincture is somewhat bittersweet and has a distinct astringency that lingers in the mouth. It pairs well with other adaptogenic herbs including ashwagandha, eleuthero, or holy basil.
